What is a Traditional Macchiato?

Customers often come into Beans & Butter and order a macchiato. The first thing that the barista will ask the customer is what kind of drink are they looking for. Most times, the customer is a Starbucks customer and wants what Starbucks calls a macchiato, which is more like a latte. We serve a traditional Italian macchiato at Beans & Butter. The traditional macchiato that we serve is a small drink, only three ounces. Our macchiato is a double shot of espresso (2 ounces) and one ounce of foamy steamed milk.
What Does Macchiato Mean?
Caffe Macchiato translates to “coffee with a spot of milk.” Italian coffee is always espresso, not what we consider brewed coffee. In fact an Americano is a watered down espresso and exists because Americans in Italy wanted a coffee that wasn’t so strong. A traditional macchiato is a strong drink.
What is the Starbucks Macchiato?
The Starbucks macchiato is a basically a latte with the order of milk and espresso layered in reverse order, with the addition of lots of flavored syrup and/or caramel. This drink is generally a larger drink and often ordered iced. We know when a customer comes into Beans & Butter and orders an iced macchiato that they are a Starbucks customer. Beans & Butter doesn’t have an iced macchiato because it would be a tiny 3 ounce cold drink. We steer the customer toward an iced latte.
Most who order a hot macchiato would be happy with our hot latte drink with the syrup of their choice.
Who Should Order Our Traditional Macchiato?
If you want a smaller drink that isn’t only espresso, but will still pack a punch of caffeine to your system, this may be the drink for you. Are you lactose intolerant? You may be able to tolerate this drink with dairy due to the small amount of milk. However, we do also offer this drink with almond or oat milk. Are you a coffee connoisseur who enjoys the taste of straight up espresso? The traditional macchiato would be a good drink for you. If you are the average latte drinker, you will be disappointed with this drink.
We Want Our Customers Happy
Please always ask your barista about any drinks of which you are unsure. We want our customers to be happy with their choice. If you are ever not satisfied with your order, please let us know at once so we can help find the correct drink for you.
